MINDY JOHNSON
Mindy Johnson is an author, filmmaker, educator and historian specializing in animation and film. Her landmark book Ink & Paint – The Women of Walt Disney’s Animation combines a history of one of American’s greatest art forms with in-depth accounts of the remarkable and often unsung female artists who brought Walt Disney’s animated masterpieces to vivid life. This game-changing volume is the basis for an 8-part docs series, which is currently in production. Johnson’s young readers volume exploring early women of animation, Pencils, Pens & Brushes – Great Girls of Disney Animation, releases August of 2019. Her earlier volumes include Tinker Bell – An Evolution, the multi-award-winning, critically acclaimed tome about everyone’s favorite fairy. Johnson has also contributed to several noted volumes on animation history, including The Walt Disney Film Archives: The Animated Movies 1921-1968 and Marc Davis: Walt Disney’s Renaissance Man, a celebration of one of Walt Disney’s legendary animators. In addition to teaching film/animation history and production at CalArts and other colleges in Los Angeles, Johnson writes, lectures and creatively consults for major studios and independent production entities. She is also an award-winning playwright, Grammy-nominated songwriter and a musician and vocalist on several international recordings.
